How to Use the Percent Off Calculator

This percent off calculator shows your savings and final price instantly — enter the original price in the first field and the discount percentage in the second. The calculator instantly shows three values: how much you save, the final price you pay, and the original price for reference. All values update in real time as you type — no need to press a calculate button. To share a specific calculation with someone, use the Share button to copy a link with your inputs pre-filled.

This tool works for any discount between 1% and 100% and any price. Whether you are shopping for a $12 item on sale or a $2,000 appliance with a holiday discount, the math is instant and accurate. For comparing two prices to find the percentage decrease, see our percent decrease calculator.

How to Calculate Percent Off

The formula for calculating a percent off discount is straightforward:

Savings = Original Price × (Discount% ÷ 100)

Final Price = Original Price − Savings

Or combined into a single step:

Final Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100)

Step-by-Step Example

A jacket originally costs $120 and is on sale for 35% off. What do you pay?

  1. Savings = $120 × (35 ÷ 100) = $120 × 0.35 = $42.00
  2. Final Price = $120 − $42.00 = $78.00

You save $42.00 and pay $78.00. Alternatively: $120 × (1 − 0.35) = $120 × 0.65 = $78.00.

Mental Math Shortcuts

For quick mental estimates, a few shortcuts help:

  • 10% off — move the decimal one place left ($80 → $8 savings)
  • 20% off — double the 10% amount ($80 → $16 savings)
  • 25% off — divide by 4 ($80 → $20 savings)
  • 50% off — divide by 2 ($80 → $40 savings)

Common Discount Percentages and What They Mean

Retail sales typically cluster around a few common discount tiers. Here is what each generally signals:

  • 5–15% off — minor discount; common for loyalty programs or early-bird promotions
  • 20–30% off — moderate sale; standard for seasonal clearance or promotional weekends
  • 40–50% off — strong discount; typical end-of-season clearance or Black Friday deals
  • 60–70% off — deep clearance; the retailer is selling near or below cost to move inventory
  • 75%+ off — liquidation pricing; verify the original price was legitimate before celebrating

A 20% coupon on top of a 40% sale does not equal 60% off — stacked discounts multiply rather than add. See the FAQ below for the correct calculation.

Percent Off vs. Percent Decrease

"Percent off" and "percent decrease" describe the same calculation from different angles. "Percent off" is a forward calculation: you know the discount and want to find the final price. "Percent decrease" is a backward analysis: you have two prices and want to know how much one dropped relative to the other. For example, if a product drops from $80 to $60, the percent decrease is (80 − 60) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%. Our rounding calculator can help you clean up messy decimal results from these calculations.

Why Prices Are Not Always What They Seem

Retail pricing psychology relies on anchoring — presenting a high "original" price to make the discounted price feel like a bargain. Studies show consumers perceive a 33% discount more favorably when framed as "buy 2, get 1 free" than as "33% off," even though the math is identical. Some retailers inflate the list price before a sale to manufacture a larger-looking discount. The best protection is to track prices over time or compare the sale price across multiple retailers before purchasing.
