How to Use This Decimal Calculator

This decimal calculator supports add, subtract, multiply, divide, modulo, and power — select an operation from the six buttons at the top, then enter your two numbers. The calculator displays the result immediately along with the full step-by-step equation and the number of decimal places in each input and the result. All operations support any decimal number, positive or negative. Division and modulo by zero are caught and show a clear error rather than an undefined result.

Decimal Arithmetic Rules

Working with decimals follows the same rules as whole-number arithmetic, with one extra step: tracking the decimal point.

Addition and Subtraction

Align the decimal points and add or subtract column by column, exactly as with integers. The result has the same number of decimal places as the operand with the most decimal places. For example, 12.5 + 3.141 = 15.641 (3 decimal places from 3.141).

Multiplication

Multiply the numbers as if they were integers, then count the total decimal places in both factors and place the decimal point that many positions from the right of the product. For example, 1.5 × 2.3: multiply 15 × 23 = 345; total decimal places = 1 + 1 = 2; result = 3.45.

Division

Decimal division is most easily handled by converting to a fraction or shifting the decimal point to make the divisor a whole number, then performing integer long division. For example, 6.4 ÷ 0.8 = 64 ÷ 8 = 8.

Modulo and Power Operations on Decimals

Two operations that are less commonly used but important for advanced math are modulo and power.

Modulo (Remainder)

The modulo operation returns the remainder after division. For whole numbers this is intuitive (7 mod 3 = 1), but it also works for decimals: 7.5 mod 2.25 = 0.75, because 7.5 / 2.25 = 3 with a remainder of 0.75. Modulo is widely used in programming (loop counters, range checks) and in computing time intervals and cyclical patterns.

Power (Exponentiation)

Raising a decimal to a power follows standard exponent rules: a^n means multiplying a by itself n times for positive integers, and extends to fractional and negative exponents via the general rule a^x = e^(x × ln(a)). For example, 2.5^3 = 15.625, and 4^0.5 = 2 (the square root of 4).

Floating-Point Precision and Rounding

Modern computers store decimal numbers in binary floating-point format (IEEE 754), which cannot represent all decimal fractions exactly. This can cause results like 0.1 + 0.2 = 0.30000000000000004 in some environments. This calculator displays up to 10 significant digits and strips trailing zeros, so results are clean and readable while remaining accurate to the full precision of JavaScript's 64-bit floating-point arithmetic (approximately 15–16 significant decimal digits).
