The Speed Distance Time Formula
The relationship between speed, distance, and time is one of the most fundamental equations in physics and everyday life:
Distance = Speed × Time
Rearranged to solve for each variable:
- Speed = Distance ÷ Time — e.g. 150 miles ÷ 2.5 hours = 60 mph
- Time = Distance ÷ Speed — e.g. 300 miles ÷ 65 mph = 4.62 hours
- Distance = Speed × Time — e.g. 60 mph × 2.5 hours = 150 miles
The critical rule: all three values must use consistent units. Speed in mph requires distance in miles and time in hours. Speed in km/h requires distance in kilometers.
