How to Calculate an Age Gap

This age gap calculator finds the exact difference between two birthdates in years, months, and days — more precise than simply subtracting birth years. For example, two people born in 1990 and 1995 are exactly 5 years apart only if their birthdays fall on the same day; otherwise the gap is 4 years and some months, or 5 years and some months, depending on which month and day each was born.

This calculator takes both birthdates and computes the exact gap, identifies who is older, shows the gap in total days, and calculates the current age of each person.

The Half-Plus-Seven Rule Explained

The half-plus-seven rule is an informal social guideline used to judge whether a romantic age gap is "socially acceptable." The formula:

Minimum acceptable partner age = (your age ÷ 2) + 7

For example:

  • If you are 30, the minimum partner age under this rule is 30 ÷ 2 + 7 = 22.
  • If you are 40, the minimum is 40 ÷ 2 + 7 = 27.
  • If you are 50, the minimum is 50 ÷ 2 + 7 = 32.
  • If you are 60, the minimum is 60 ÷ 2 + 7 = 37.

The rule has no scientific basis and originated as a humorous social observation, not a formal psychological or ethical standard. It is a cultural heuristic — useful as a rough gut-check, not as a hard rule. Many happy and healthy relationships fall outside these bounds.

Age Gap Research: What the Data Says

A 2014 Emory University study analyzed over 3,000 couples and found that larger age gaps correlated with higher divorce rates:

  • 1-year gap: 3% more likely to divorce than same-age couples
  • 5-year gap: 18% more likely to divorce
  • 10-year gap: 39% more likely to divorce
  • 20-year gap: 95% more likely to divorce

Importantly, these are statistical averages — they do not predict any individual couple's outcome. The study's authors noted that shared values, financial alignment, and communication skills were stronger predictors of relationship success than age gap alone.

Use the chronological age calculatorto find each person's exact age and life milestones before comparing.

Age Gaps at Different Life Stages

The same chronological age gap can feel very different depending on what life stage each person is in. A 5-year gap between a 20-year-old (possibly still in college) and a 25-year-old (likely in their first career) involves fundamentally different daily realities. The same 5-year gap between a 42-year-old and a 47-year-old often feels imperceptible — both are likely in established careers and potentially raising children.

Psychologists call this "life stage alignment" — the degree to which two partners are experiencing similar phases of adulthood simultaneously. Age gaps that straddle major life transitions (finishing school, starting a family, retiring) tend to create more friction than gaps that don't.

Future Milestone Ages

This calculator shows how old each person will be when Person A reaches milestone ages (30, 40, 50, 60, 65). These projections help visualize the practical implications of an age gap over time:

  • Will both partners want to retire around the same time?
  • When one partner hits 65 (Medicare eligibility), how old will the other be?
  • If you start a family, what ages will both parents be when children graduate high school?

Most Common Age Gaps in Relationships

U.S. Census and Pew Research data shows the following distribution of age gaps in married couples:

  • Same age (0–1 year): ~20–25% of marriages
  • 2–5 year gap: The most common range — roughly 40–45% of couples
  • 6–10 year gap: Approximately 15–20% of couples
  • 10+ year gap: Roughly 8–10% of couples

In the United States, husbands are older than wives in the majority of heterosexual couples — approximately 64% of marriages have an older husband, while about 23% have partners within one year of each other, and roughly 13% have an older wife.

Legal Considerations and Age of Consent

Age of consent laws vary by jurisdiction and are entirely separate from any social "rule of thumb." In the United States, age of consent ranges from 16 to 18 depending on the state. In many countries it is 16. These laws define the minimum age at which a person can legally consent to sexual activity and take precedence over any informal age-gap guidelines. The half-plus-seven rule and similar social heuristics have no legal standing and are not a substitute for understanding local law.

When one person in a relationship is a minor and the other is an adult, no social rule of thumb applies — legal requirements govern the situation entirely.
