This age gap calculator finds the exact difference between two birthdates in years, months, and days — more precise than simply subtracting birth years. For example, two people born in 1990 and 1995 are exactly 5 years apart only if their birthdays fall on the same day; otherwise the gap is 4 years and some months, or 5 years and some months, depending on which month and day each was born.

The Half-Plus-Seven Rule Explained

The half-plus-seven rule is an informal social guideline used to judge whether a romantic age gap is "socially acceptable." The formula:

Minimum acceptable partner age = (your age ÷ 2) + 7

For example:

• If you are 30, the minimum partner age under this rule is 30 ÷ 2 + 7 = 22.
• If you are 40, the minimum is 40 ÷ 2 + 7 = 27.
• If you are 50, the minimum is 50 ÷ 2 + 7 = 32.

The rule has no scientific basis and originated as a humorous social observation, not a formal psychological or ethical standard. It is a cultural heuristic — useful as a rough gut-check, not as a hard rule. Many happy and healthy relationships fall outside these bounds.
