What Is a Deck? Materials, Codes, and Planning

This deck calculator estimates board count, linear footage, and cost for an outdoor platform attached to or adjacent to a house, typically built from wood, composite lumber, or PVC boards over a structural frame of joists and beams. Decks add significant living space and are among the highest-ROI home improvements — the National Association of Realtors consistently ranks deck additions at 60–80% cost recovery on resale. A well-built 200 sq ft deck adds roughly 15–20% more usable living space to a typical home.

Residential decks are governed by IRC Section R507, which covers materials, spans, connections, and ledger attachment. Key structural requirements include:

  • Ledger attachment — decks attached to the house must use lag screws or through-bolts into the band joist; the ledger must be protected from moisture with proper flashing to prevent rot at the house connection
  • Post and footing sizing — footings must extend below the frost line and be sized for the tributary area they carry; most jurisdictions require a concrete diameter of at least 12 inches
  • Joist spans — 2×8 joists at 16" OC can span up to about 13 ft for southern yellow pine; 2×10 at 16" OC can span up to about 16 ft (verify with IRC Table R507.5)

How to Calculate Deck Boards

Calculating how many deck boards you need comes down to three measurements: the deck width (the dimension perpendicular to the boards), the board width, and the gap between boards. The formula for a standard 90° layout is:

Board Count = ceil(Deck Width ÷ (Board Width + Gap)) × (1 + Waste Factor)

For example, a 12 ft wide deck using 5/4×6 boards (5.5 in actual width) with a ¼ in gap has a board pitch of 5.75 in (0.479 ft). Dividing 12 ft by 0.479 ft gives 25.05, rounded up to 26 boards. Board Width and Spacing — Standard Sizes and Gaps

Deck boards are sold by nominal size but the actual (net) width is what matters for calculations. The two most common choices are:

  • 5/4×6 (actual 1×5.5 in) — the most popular residential decking board. Lightweight, economical, and suitable for joist spacing up to 16 in on center.
  • 2×4 (actual 1.5×3.5 in) — narrower boards give a refined look but require more pieces and more linear footage.

Standard gap spacing is ¼ inch (0.25 in) for pressure-treated lumber. This allows drainage and minor expansion while keeping the surface even underfoot. Composite decking may specify 3/16 in or ¼ in — always check the product installation guide. In high-rainfall areas, some builders use ⅜ in gaps.

90° vs. 45° Diagonal Decking — How Angle Affects Board Count

Diagonal decking (45°) creates a visually striking pattern but requires significantly more material. Because boards run at an angle across the frame, every edge creates a triangular cutoff. The math: diagonal board count equals the standard count multiplied by √2 (approximately 1.414). In practice, this means a 45° deck uses about 41% more boards than the same deck laid at 90°.

For a 12×16 ft deck, a standard layout needs roughly 29 boards (5/4×6, 10% waste). The same deck at 45° needs about 41 boards. Use a 15% waste factor for diagonal layouts to account for all the angled cuts. You will also need to check that your joists can handle the load at the new angle — diagonal decking usually requires closer joist spacing (12 in on center vs. 16 in).

Deck Material Cost Estimates

Material cost varies widely by wood species and whether you choose solid wood or composite. Typical price ranges per linear foot:

  • Pressure-treated pine: $1.50–$3.50/lf — the most affordable option; requires periodic sealing
  • Cedar: $3.00–$6.00/lf — naturally rot-resistant; lighter weight; holds stain well
  • Redwood: $5.00–$10.00/lf — premium natural option; excellent durability
  • Composite (Trex, TimberTech, Azek): $4.00–$12.00/lf — no sealing required; 25-year warranties common; higher upfront cost

Planning Post Holes and Footings

Before purchasing decking boards, confirm that your deck footings are sized correctly for local frost depth and load requirements. Deck Maintenance and Board Selection

The right board choice reduces long-term maintenance costs. Pressure-treated lumber requires cleaning and re-sealing every 1–3 years to prevent graying and checking. Cedar and redwood are naturally rot-resistant but still benefit from an annual coat of UV-protective finish. Composite decking requires only occasional cleaning with soap and water but costs 2–4× more upfront.

Regardless of material, leave at least ½ in clearance between the deck surface and any wall or ledger board so water can drain freely. Check that fastener types are compatible with your decking material — pressure-treated lumber requires hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel screws to prevent premature corrosion.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ordering too few boards — always add at least 10% for cuts, defects, and long-term repairs
  • Ignoring actual vs. nominal width — a nominal 6 in board is actually 5.5 in; using nominal width will leave your count short
  • Skipping the gap — boards installed flush will buckle when they absorb moisture; the gap is structural, not decorative
  • Using the wrong fasteners — ACQ pressure-treated lumber corrodes standard steel screws; use coated or stainless fasteners
