You built the frame. Now you're standing at the garden center staring at a wall of bagged soil wondering what to grab — and how many bags. The choice matters more than most beginners realize: fill a raised bed with the wrong mix and it compacts within one season, cutting off the drainage and root oxygen that make raised beds worth building in the first place.
Why You Can't Just Use Garden Soil
Regular topsoil and native garden soil compact under repeated irrigation. In the ground, this is a slow process that earthworms and freeze-thaw cycles gradually reverse. In a raised bed — where the soil is confined and there's no surrounding earth to absorb excess moisture — compaction is faster and more severe. Within a season, poorly chosen fill turns into something close to adobe: water pools on top, roots struggle to penetrate, and the plants perform no better than they would have in the ground you were trying to improve.
Bagged topsoil sold at home centers is also typically heavy clay-loam, screened for rocks but not optimized for drainage. Some bags labeled "garden soil" are better — usually a topsoil-compost blend — but even those need amending before they're ideal for a raised bed.
The Standard Raised Bed Soil Mix
The most widely used formula for raised bed fill is a three-part blend:
- 60% topsoil — the structural base that gives the mix weight and moisture retention. Use a screened, loamy topsoil, not fill dirt.
- 30% compost — the most important ingredient. Compost provides slow-release nutrients, feeds soil biology, and keeps the mix from compacting. Use aged compost; fresh manure can burn roots.
- 10% aeration — perlite, coarse horticultural sand, or vermiculite. This keeps the mix loose as the organic matter breaks down over time.

Minimum Depth by Plant Type
The depth of the bed determines what you can grow — and it's the dimension that most prefab raised bed kits get wrong. A 4-inch frame is really only suited for salad greens and shallow herbs.

If the bed is sitting on native soil (not a deck or patio), roots can extend below the fill. In that case, 12 inches of raised bed fill is sufficient for most vegetables, even tomatoes — the roots will reach into the soil below once established.
How Much Soil Do You Actually Need
Volume is calculated in cubic feet, then converted to cubic yards if you're ordering bulk:

Bags vs. Bulk Delivery: When Each Makes Sense
Pre-mixed raised bed soil in bags is convenient for small projects but expensive at scale. The math turns against bags quickly:
- Under ~3 cubic feet: bags win on convenience. A few bags of quality raised bed mix cost roughly $20–$35 and require no minimum delivery.
- Over 3 cubic feet: bulk delivery from a landscape supplier becomes cost-effective. One cubic yard of bulk garden mix typically runs $45–$80 depending on region and blend — the equivalent volume in 2 cu ft bags costs $120–$200 or more at most home centers.
- Multiple beds: almost always order bulk. Two 4×8 beds at 12 inches deep need 2.4 cubic yards — bulk is the obvious choice.
