How much drywall do you need is a question that sounds simple until you're standing in the lumber yard guessing. Most first-time estimates either short the job by forgetting the ceiling or over-buy by ignoring doors and windows. The good news: the math is straightforward once you know the right steps.
How Drywall Sheets Are Sized
Standard drywall comes in 4 × 8 ft sheets, each covering 32 square feet. For rooms with 9 ft ceilings, 4 × 9 ft sheets (36 sq ft) are common and reduce horizontal seams. High-ceiling rooms sometimes use 4 × 12 ft sheets (48 sq ft) to eliminate a seam entirely. For estimating purposes, 4 × 8 is the safest default unless you know your supplier stocks the larger sizes.

How to Calculate Drywall for Walls — Step by Step
The method is the same for any room: find the gross wall area, subtract openings, then divide by sheet size.
- Add up all wall lengths. For a rectangular room, that's
(length + width) × 2. - Multiply by ceiling height to get gross square footage.
- Subtract openings.A standard interior door opening is about 21 sq ft (3 × 7 ft); a typical window is 10–15 sq ft. Subtract each opening's area.
- Divide by 32 (for 4 × 8 sheets) and round up to the nearest whole sheet.
Worked example: 12 × 14 ft bedroom, 8 ft ceilings, one door, one window
Total wall length: (12 + 14) × 2 = 52 linear ft
Gross wall area: 52 × 8 = 416 sq ft
Minus door: 416 – 21 = 395 sq ft
Minus window: 395 – 12 = 383 sq ft

Don't Forget the Ceiling
Ceilings are the most commonly forgotten surface. For the 12 × 14 ft example above, the ceiling adds 168 sq ft — that's 5.25 more 4 × 8 sheets, or roughly 30% more material than the walls alone. Always calculate walls and ceiling separately since they often use different thickness drywall.
For the ceiling calculation, just multiply room length by room width and divide by sheet size. No openings to subtract unless you have a skylight or attic hatch.
Choosing the Right Drywall Thickness
Thickness matters more than most people realize — use the wrong type and you could fail an inspection or create a fire hazard.

If you're drywalling an attached garage, IRC Section R302.6 requires at least 1/2 in drywall on the walls and 5/8 in Type X on the ceiling for fire separation. Standard 1/2 in won't pass here.
How Much Extra to Order — Waste Factors by Room Type
Always order more than your net calculation. Drywall gets cut around outlets, corners, and odd angles — those offcuts can't be returned.
- Simple rectangular rooms: add 10%. Multiply your sheet count by 1.10 and round up.
- Rooms with multiple windows, closets, or angled walls: add 15%.
- Complex shapes (L-rooms, cathedral ceilings, lots of corners): add 15–20%.
- First-time hanger: err toward 15% regardless — cleaner cuts take practice.
A small overage is cheap insurance. Running short on the last wall means a second trip for a single sheet — and matching drywall lots at the store is harder than it sounds.
